The station barracks is a former barracks in the East Westphalian city of Minden , which was built in 1869 for troops passing through in the immediate vicinity of the station of the city of Minden on the right bank of the Weser . It has been on the city of Minden's list of monuments since 1991 .

history

Barrier after the fire in August 2015

Minden was expanded into a Prussian fortress from 1827 to 1873 . The station was on the right bank of the Weser and thus outside the actual city center. There was enough space here for the station barracks to be built in 1869 . This happened after the Prussian annexation of the Kingdom of Hanover in 1866, as a result of which the station changed its function as a border station to an inland station with transfer functions. This change also affected the troops passing through. The station barracks could accommodate up to 600 soldiers, so that the pressure to billet by soldiers in the Minden Fortress - at that time often among private individuals - was noticeably relieved in the city.

In addition, from 1877 the III. Battalion of the infantry regiment "Prince Friedrich of the Netherlands" (2nd Westphalian) No. 15 housed.

The building was used by the city of Minden from 1919 after the First World War . During the Second World War it was used again for military purposes. In 1991 the building was entered in the list of monuments of the city of Minden . From 1992 to 2011 the play and learning room of the Marienkirche is housed in the building. The building was then sold to a private investor from North Hesse, who is considering furnishing rooms for student living, among other things. On August 10, 2015, a fire broke out in the empty building, which mainly destroyed the roof and storey structures on Friedrich-Wilhelm Strasse and Kasernenstrasse. The police suspect arson. Since then, the building has been cordoned off in a security measure.

After the fire, the investor from Northern Hesse went bankrupt, nothing was done to the building. In December 2016, the station barracks were foreclosed by the Minden District Court . The new owner is Kögel Immobilien GmbH from Bad Oeynhausen.

This immediately clears up the site and in the building, clearing it of rubble and rubbish. At the same time, the preparatory work for a 3D acquisition begins. In 2017 he wants to present the possible usage concepts.

The building is a simple, three-wing brick building with three floors and four-story corner towers on the corners. The facade of the brick building is strictly structured. The arched windows are framed by external sandstone stops.

Use of the building

After the fortress was closed, part of the function of the station barracks was canceled. It was used for military purposes until after the First World War. In the Third Reich, a foreign labor camp was built in the immediate vicinity. In the 1950s, the barracks were rented by the city of Minden, which built an emergency shelter for non-residents here. In addition, the St. Marien parish had set up its day-care center (play and study room) here. The further use was discussed for a long time. Then the Federal Agency for Real Estate Tasks (BIMA), which is responsible for state real estate, sold the building as the owner at the end of October 2012 to a broker from Lohfelden. According to the press, this was planning to be used for student living. According to the city's website, there was no building application at the time of the fire.
