Orbit reading

The course reading is the continuous reading of the biblical books in Christian worship based on the model of the Jewish synagogue worship , in which the Torah is read continuously and the prophets are read in selection (see Haftara ). "The early Church continued this tradition, adding readings from the Gospels and the letters of the Apostles."

In the Catholic Church since the second Vatican Council and by Pope Paul VI. The liturgical reform carried out for the railway reading observes a three-year cycle (or a two-year cycle for the weekday readings) in accordance with the reading regulations .

In the Protestant-Reformed congregations on the Lower Rhine, “continuous reading (lectio continua) before the beginning of the Sunday morning service” was practiced for a long time. Even today, many pastors and preachers in Reformed churches continue to preach "over a continuous larger section, even an entire biblical book".

The Protestant churches of Uniate and Lutheran character, however, follow the older Catholic tradition in their pericopes , according to which every Sunday is marked by a gospel according to the themes of the church year . The other readings are grouped to fit this gospel.
