Building history and architecture

At the beginning of the 20th century there was a shortage of apartments in Bergheim that were inexpensive but also adapted to the changed living needs. To solve this problem, the "Bauverein Bergheim" was founded in 1905. His goal was to build on the newly planned street between Kölner Straße and Commerstraße according to the ideas of modern architecture. It was also important to the local council to improve the living situation in Bergheim. Therefore, in 1905, he commissioned the building association to develop this street. The building association in turn commissioned the Bedburg architect and later district builder Anton Ruland to plan the residential buildings. Construction of the first apartments (nos. 18 and 20) began as early as 1906. When the Bauverein was dissolved in the 1930s, the property became the property of the city of Bergheim.

House No. 12 (Haus Ruland) was built in 1914/15 by the district architect Anton Ruland. Ruland lived in the two and a half story building with his family of seven. He ran his architecture office in the neighboring house No. 10, which he had acquired from Bauverein Bergheim. The two houses were connected on each floor.
