Cathedral-Basilica of San Jose de Mayo

The Roman Catholic Catedral Basílica de San José de Mayo is the seat of the diocese of San José de Mayo in the city of San José de Mayo , capital of the Uruguayan department of San José .

The cathedral-basilica located on Plaza Treinta y Tres , 72 meters long and 26 meters wide, was built in the architectural style of the 19th century and was built between 1858 and 1874. The builder was the Catalan Antonio Fongibel . In the nave there are eight Carrara marble columns , each of which took a month to transport from the port of Montevideo to San José de Mayo. The domes are decorated with azulejos from the French department of Pas-de-Calais . In the towers of the cathedral-basilica there are bells, the largest of which weighs over three tons, and the sound of which can be heard within a radius of up to 15 kilometers. One of the towers is equipped with a large clock from Europe that has been in service here since August 25, 1900.

On October 2, 1990, the cathedral-basilica was declared a national historical monument ("Monumento Histórico Nacional").
