The Pétange – Bois Châtier railway is an industrial line in Luxembourg . Today part of the route is used by the “ Train 1900 ” museum railway .

history

The Prince Heinrich Railway Company was awarded the concession in 1873 to build an industrial railway to the mines southwest of Pétange. The first section from Pétange to Lamadelaine was opened in December 1875, the remaining section was already under construction. Due to the financial difficulties of the railway company, construction work was stopped in 1876 for the time being. Until then, the short stretch to Graas had been completed.

In 1877 the license was withdrawn from the Prince Heinrich Railway Company, and the anonymous Luxembourg Prince Heinrich Railway and Ore Mine Company , which was then founded , not only took over the concessions but also all the property of the first company and continued construction in the summer of 1878. In April 1879 the extension to Bois Châtier was opened shortly before the French border.

Passenger traffic did not take place on the route. A connection to the French railway network at Bois Châtier - a few hundred meters of track was missing - was not built either. The wagon loads had to take a much longer and therefore more lucrative route for the railway company via the route network of the Anonymous Luxembourg Prince Heinrich Railway and Ore Mine Company. The bulk of the traffic was made up of the removal of the ore that was extracted;

The first ore mines closed during the Second World War, and ore was last loaded on the route in 1962. In the autumn of 1964 a landslide buried the tracks at 2.2 km, and traffic was then abandoned. The line was officially closed in 1970. The stretch from km 2.2 to Bois de Rodange has been used by the Train 1900 museum railway ever since . In 1986 Train bought the route in 1900 .
