The railway Portland Preble Street Portland Union Station is a railway line in Maine ( United States ). It is around one kilometer long. The standard gauge line is closed.

history

The Portland and Rochester Railroad terminus in Portland was to the north of the city. In 1888 a new central station, Portland Union Station , was opened. Since Portland & Rochester also wanted to introduce their passenger trains to the new central station, they built a short connecting line from their terminus to Union Station in 1891. The passenger trains pulled into Preble Street Station and then reversed into Central Station. As early as 1851 to 1861 there had been a connecting line between Preble Street station and the main line on which the central station was later built. However, this followed a different route.

In 1900 the Boston and Maine Railroad took over the Portland & Rochester and the connecting line was handed over to the Portland Terminal Company , which was part of the Boston & Maine. The cumbersome detour via Preble Street was eliminated when the section between Deering Junction and the junction of the connecting railway was closed in 1911 and the passenger trains from then on used the Maine Central Railroad route between Deering Junction and Union Station. At the same time, passenger traffic on the connecting line also ended. When Guilford Transportation took over the Portland Terminal Company and Boston & Maine in 1983, the operator of the railway line also changed. The Guilford Transportation put the route together with the Preble Street freight yard around 2000. The city's plans envisage acquiring the site of the railway line and converting the route into a cycle and footpath.

Route description

The line branches off to the west of the Preble Street station from the now completely built-up line of Portland & Rochester and leads to the southwest. It runs on the northern edge of Deering Oaks Park and right off Interstate 295 . Shortly after crossing under Deering Avenue, the route turns south and joins the site of the former central station. The track connections to the main line have now been removed, as have some level crossings.
