Balša I.

Balša I. (in German Balscha; † 1362 ) was a nobleman who founded an independent rule over the Zeta landscape on the southeastern Adriatic coast in the mid- 14th century . He is the ancestor of the noble family of Balšići .

Balša I served as an officer in the army of Emperor Stefan Dušan . The confusion after Stefan Dusan's death, he knew sent exploit by large sections of the Zeta and the significant Albanian city of Shkodra brought into his possession and a quasi-independent principality built, although he is nominally the Serbian King supremacy Uroš V. recognized.

Balša I had three sons, Stracimir, Đurađ and Balša II , and a daughter, Voislava, who was married to Prince Karl Thopia .

Balša I. received citizenship of the Republic of Dubrovnik in 1361 .
