history

Balboa Island , located in Newport Bay, developed from a trading center into a residential area in the 1890s. The island was quickly settled and finally incorporated into Newport Beach in 1916. Three years later, Joseph Beek, a well-known California politician, received the rights to operate a ferry service. The original ship, The Ark , initially operated on demand.

From 1919 to 1953 the crossing cost a nickel . In the 1950s, three wooden ferries named Admiral , Captain and Commodore replaced the previous model. The three ferries are still in operation today, they can each transport up to three cars and are 19.5 meters long. Up to 1.5 million passengers use the Balboa Island Ferry for a crossing each year.
