The Balboa Fun Zone is a theme park in Newport Beach in the US state of California . The facility at the harbor is on the Balboa Peninsula . The historic Balboa Pavilion is in the immediate vicinity .
history
The Balboa Fun Zone was established by Al Anderson in 1936. The facility was on leased land that Anderson bought from the owner in 1948. The big Ferris wheel from 1918 quickly became a symbol of the city. From 1972 to 1985 the amusement park remained closed due to legal problems. Only a year later it was reopened thanks to the initiative of Jordan Wank. In 1994, former employees Joe Tunstall and Bob Speth bought the facility. The Balboa Fun Zone was acquired by the neighboring Newport Harbor Nautical Museum in 2005. Some of the rides were then dismantled to make room for the museum extension. The old ferris wheel is one of the last remaining attractions today. At night it is very colorfully illuminated and therefore a popular photo opportunity.
