The Newport Harbor Nautical Museum is a maritime museum in Newport Beach in the US state of California . The port facility is located on the Balboa Peninsula on Newport Bay , a bay that connects to the Pacific Ocean .

history

The museum opened its doors in 1986. At that time, the exhibition was still housed in a building on Balboa Boulevard and had only one room. The museum was run by volunteers.

A few years later the premises became too cramped. In 1994 it was decided to move to a suitable location. The old paddle steamer Pride of Newport , which was anchored in the harbor, was chosen as its new home from 1995. A larger area and professional organization made the museum more attractive.

The development progressed steadily. At the end of 2005, the museum acquired an area of 3,100 square meters from the neighboring Balboa Fun Zone , on which the construction of a new building complex was planned. The first two exhibition rooms have been open to visitors since December 2006.

Plans for further expansion are ongoing. The existing buildings are to be supplemented by further glass pavilions . In the near future, the museum's own dock will also offer space for historic sailing ships .

exhibition

The museum currently has two exhibition rooms, which are to be supplemented by more by 2010.

The Richard and Betty Steele Model Pavilion is home to a collection of all types of ship models . This also includes a model made of 22- carat gold and silver . In addition, some of the approximately 58,000 photographs that are in the museum's possession can be viewed here. The pictures show motifs from the local harbor and some date back to the 1890s.

In the East Wing there are aquariums with a variety of different marine animals. A petting pool enables direct contact with starfish , among other things .

Changing exhibitions on the history of seafaring as well as lectures and offers for schoolchildren complete the offer.
