Bald Island is an island on the south coast of the Australian state of Western Australia . It is one of the largest islands off the southwest coast of Australia.

Bald Island is home to the Bald Island Nature Reserve , a World Conservation Union Category A nature reserve. This was created in 1964 and has been administered by the Department of Parks and Wildlife ever since .

Bald Iceland is 4.5 kilometers long and 1.9 kilometers wide. It is located 1.5 kilometers from Channel Point , a headland on the mainland. The island belongs to the place Cheynes .

The highest point on the island is 310 meters above sea level. Bald Iceland consists almost entirely of limestone . The island was isolated by rising sea levels 10,000 years ago.

Flora and fauna

Bald Island, with Rottnest Island, is one of the last places where wild quokkas live. The population on the island, which consists of S. brachyurus , has thinner and smaller tails and a slightly different head compared to others. They are also the smallest quokkas. The population was isolated from the mainland for about 10,000 years.

The island is home to five species of reptiles, a gecko and four skinks .

There are 104 different plant species on Bald Island. The dominant plant species is Melaleuca lanceolata which forms bushes or small trees. Agonis flexuosa , a tree, covers the upper steep slopes of the island, while the more exposed lower slopes are covered by Melaleuca microphylla . Also Eucalyptus lehmannii makes some stains forest.
