Melaleuca lanceolata is a species of the genus myrtle heather ( Melaleuca ) withinthe myrtle family (Myrtaceae). It is native to Australia.

Vegetative characteristics

Melaleuca lanceolata is a shrub or small tree and reaches heights of growth of up to 10 meters. The bark is rough and the bark of young twigs is downy hairy.

The alternate leaves are arranged in a petiole and a leaf blade. The petiole is about 1 millimeter long. The simple, bald leaf blade is 5 to 15 millimeters long and 1 to 3 millimeters wide, linear to narrow-lanceolate with a pointed upper end.

Generative characteristics

Many flowers stand together 2 to 4 centimeters long, spike-like inflorescences . The inflorescence axis is hairy. The flowers stand in threes in the armpits of bracts.

The hermaphrodite flowers are radially symmetrical with a double flower envelope . The white petals are egg-shaped with a length of 1.5 to 2.5 millimeters. 8 to 14 stamens stand together in a bundle .

The fruit is spherical or urn-shaped with a diameter of 4 to 5 millimeters and the opening is about 1 millimeter in size. The sepals remain on the fruit.

Occurrence

Melaleuca lanceolata occurs in the Australian states of Western Australia , Queensland , New South Wales and Victoria.

Melaleuca lanceolata grows in the mallee and in open woodlands on loamy soils . It is widespread and locally common in drier areas of New South Wales. In Western Australia it is found on limestone, clay and loam soils, on brown, gray and white sand. It grows here on limestone slopes, coastal cliffs and dunes, in salt flats and nearby salt lakes.

The first description of Melaleuca lanceolata was in 1820 by Christoph Friedrich Otto in Christian Gottfried Daniel Nees von Esenbeck's work Horae Physicae Berolinensis .
