description

Appearance and leaf

Eucalyptus lehmannii grows in the form of the mallee - eucalyptus , this is a growth form that is more shrub -like than tree-shaped , there are usually several trunks that form a lignotuber ; or tree that reaches heights of up to 7 meters. The bark is smooth and gray, gray-brown, red-brown, red or slightly pink on the entire tree. Often older bark collects on the lower part of the trunk. There are oil glands in the marrow, but not in the bark.

In Eucalyptus lehmannii , heterophyllia is present. The leaves are always divided into a petiole and a leaf blade. The petiole is narrowly flattened or channel-shaped. On middle-aged specimens, the leaf blade is elliptical to ovate, straight, with entire margins and dull green. The leaf blades of the same color on the top and bottom of adult specimens are lanceolate to elliptical, relatively thick, straight, taper towards the base of the blade and have a rounded upper end. The side nerves, which are barely recognizable, extend from the median nerve at an acute angle. The cotyledons ( cotyledons ) are in two parts.

Inflorescence, flower and fruit

On the side of a flattened or angular inflorescence stem with a width of up to 3 mm in cross section, there are more than eleven flowers together in a simple inflorescence . The flower buds are cylindrical or beak-shaped and not floured or frosted blue-green. The sepals form a calyptra that falls off early. The smooth calyptra is elongated-pointed or beak-shaped, three times as long as the smooth flower cup (hypanthium) and narrower than this. The flowers are white, yellow or green. The flowering period in Western Australia is January to March, July, September or November to December.

The disc is flat, the fruit fans stick out.

Occurrence

The natural range of Eucalyptus lehmannii is the western and central part of the south coast of Western Australia , around Albany and Esperance . Eucalyptus lehmannii occurs in the independent administrative districts of Albany , Esperance , Jerramungup and Ravensthorpe , in the Great Southern and Goldfields-Esperance regions .

Eucalyptus lehmannii grows on sand , gravel and clay soils over sand , laterite or granite stone . Eucalyptus lehmannii can be found on rock bars, on sand dunes on the coast, in stream beds, on hills or on exposed slopes.

Systematics

The first description was in 1844 by Johann Conrad Schauer under the name ( Basionym ) Symphyomyrtus lehmannii Schauer in Plantae Preissianae , Volume 1 (1), p. 127. The type material has the inscription “In glareosis sterilibus collium Konkoberup promontorii Cape Rich, November a. 1840. cum floribus et fructibus maturis lecta. Herb. Price. No. 227 “ . The new combination to Eucalyptus lehmannii (Schauer) Benth. took place in 1867 in Flora Australiensis , Volume 3, p. 233. Schauer chose the specific epithet lehmannii in honor of his German botanist colleague Johann Georg Christian Lehmann . Other synonyms for Eucalyptus lehmannii (Schauer) Benth. are Eucalyptus macrocera Turcz., Eucalyptus lehmannii Benth. orth. var. and Symphyomyrtus lehmannii Schauer orth. var.

There are two subspecies of Eucalyptus lehmannii (Schauer) Benth .:

  • Eucalyptus lehmannii (shower) Benth. subsp. lehmannii
  • Eucalyptus lehmannii subsp. parallela D. Nicolle & MEFrench, Syn .: Eucalyptus lehmannii subsp. Narrow Leaf (D. Nicolle & M. French DN 4806) D. Nicolle, Eucalyptus lehmannii subsp. Northern (M. French 425) WA Herbarium, Eucalyptus lehmannii subsp. modifolia D. Nicolle , Eucalyptus lehmannii subsp. linearifolia D. Nicolle

With Eucalyptus megacornuta , Eucalyptus sporadica and Eucalyptus tetraptera , the subspecies Eucalyptus lehmannii subsp. parallela natural hybrids . There are varieties.
