Coordinates: 33 ° 51 ′  S , 121 ° 53 ′  E The Shire of Esperance is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of Western Australia . The area is 42,547 km² and has about 14,000 inhabitants (2016).

Esperance is located in the south of the state on the Australian south coast about 600 km southeast of the capital Perth . The seat of the Shire Council is in the city of Esperance , where about 10,000 people live (2016).

The Esperance Council has 13 members, eleven councilors are elected by the residents of the two wards (seven from the Town Ward and four from the Rural Ward). The chairman of the council (Shire President) and his deputy (deputy) are additionally elected by all residents of the LGA.

Others

After the crash of the US Skylab on July 11, 1979 east of Perth and parts went down in the municipal area of Esperance Shire. Local authorities sent NASA a $ 400 fine for unauthorized waste disposal. NASA declined payment, and it was not until 2009 that the outstanding amount was paid by a US radio station.
