Balduinus Iuvenis

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Balduinus Iuvenis was the Bruges-based poet of the animal poem Reynardus vulpes , a Latin translation of the Central Dutch Van den vos Reynaerde . Since he dedicated this work to the provost of the Sint-Donaaskathedraal of Bruges and the collegiate church Saint-Pierre in Lille Johann von Flanders , the time of creation can be narrowed down to the years 1272–1279, in which Johann, the later Bishop of Metz , held these two offices exercised. In the epilogue of his greatly shortened translation, Baldwin called himself old, so he can hardly be equated with the Cistercian of the same name from the Ter Doest monastery, who was mentioned as executor in 1298 . Donald N. Yates and Richard H. Rouse suspected that Baldwin, the name of the donkey in the epic, could also be a pseudonym .
