A spinnaker is an example of a balloon sail.

The term balloon sailing is when sailing a generic term for various bulbous cut headsail . Usually, such sails are mainly used on space sheet courses (with the wind at an angle from behind), with the sail standing like a balloon in front of the ship. Examples of balloon sails are reachers , gennakers , blisters and spinnakers . They differ mainly in how bulky they are cut and how close to the wind they can be used.
