Ballycastle ( Irish Baile an Chaisil ) is a village in Ireland . It is located in the northeast of County Mayo in the province of Connacht , northwest of the city of Ballina near the coast, and has 219 inhabitants (as of 2016).

History and sights

The settlement of the area over 5,000 years ago can be proven by excavations of the Céide Fields west of the city. Remains of Stone Age and Bronze Age settlement structures were excavated here on an area of ​​over 1,500 hectares . An exhibition in the visitor center provides information on the settlement of the area.

An impressive coastal formation with the approximately 50 meter high surf pillar “Dún Briste”. The connection to the mainland broke off in the 14th century - at that time people are said to have been rescued from the rock with ropes and boats.
