history

Balmanno Castle

The castle was built after 1570 as a residential tower with an L-shaped floor plan. In 1915, the well-known Scottish architect Sir Robert Lorimer converted the tower into a summer residence for the then owner, William Millar , a shipowner from Glasgow . He carried out his work with great acuracy. Additional parts of the building form a courtyard with the original residential tower. Lorimer took the liberty of tinkering with the Gothic and built in interior details of Holyrood Palace , the restoration of which was the work of Sir William Bruce (1630-1710). He furnished the house in every detail, with parts that he had either specially commissioned or with items of trade that he had bought all over the country. He provided the expensive furniture.

After the Second World War , Balmanno Castle was sold. James Michael Edward Bruce and his wife, Jean Coats , lived in the castle in the 1950s. Your descendants still live there today.

Historic Scotland has listed Balmanno Castle as a Category A Historic Building.
