Baltic Works

The Baltic Works are a former flax processing mill in the Scottish town of Arbroath in the Council Area Angus . In 1971 the building was included in the Scottish monument lists, initially in category B. The upgrade to the highest monument category A took place in 2003.

history

The Baltic Works were founded in 1852 by Andrew Lowson . By 1864 the mill had developed into the largest textile manufacturing company in Arbroath. After Lowson's death in 1897, his sons took over the company. After rash investments overseas, they had to offer the mills for sale. In 1905 only one of the mills was still in operation. In 1948 the company was finally dissolved.

From 1932 the buildings were used as a whiskey warehouse. They have been empty since the 1990s. In 1997 the Baltic Works were added to the register of endangered listed buildings in Scotland. After looking for a new use for a long time, it was decided in 2014 to convert the former mill into affordable living space.
