Bamberg Amthof

The Bamberg Amthof is a secular building in the municipality of Feldkirchen in Carinthia . Originally built in the 13th and 14th centuries as the official residence of the Bamberg Ministerial , it is now used as a cultural and event center.

history

Numerous areas in today's Carinthia were donated to the church in the 11th and 12th centuries. In 1166, among other things, today's municipality of Feldkirchen was assigned to the Bamberg diocese . In the 13th and 14th centuries, a manorial building was built on the area of today's Amthof, which was to serve as the administrative center and seat of the Bamberg ministerial. However, no remains of this first structure have survived today.

At the beginning of the 15th century, the complex consisted of a two-storey, massive residential tower, which was first mentioned in documents in 1422 as the tower of Feldkirchen. This “tower” is the north wing of today's facility. In 1434 the Ungnad family was enfeoffed with the Feldkirchen property of the Bamberg family. They had the Amthof fortified and expanded in view of the impending Turkish invasions. The multi-storey tower in the southeast corner of the original building and the entire east and south-east walling, including the south-east round tower and the three-storey central tower on the south side, come from this construction phase.

The Amthof was expanded further in the 17th and 18th centuries under the Foregger family. The defensive wall was added in the southwest corner and around the southwest round tower and the angle between the original building and the southeast tower was built. The entire north wing was increased.

Inner courtyard of the Amthof with arcades

At the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century - the owner was now the brickworks owner Faleschini - the east and west wing were rebuilt, including the defensive walls, and the inner courtyard was equipped with arcades . The southern central tower was structurally connected to the two corner towers, so that the four-winged complex was created today.

In the years 1991 to 1993 the entire complex was restored.

Todays use

The Amthof serves the municipality of Feldkirchen today as a cultural and event center. The building houses the Feldkirchen district music school, the “Kultur-Forum-Amthof”, which organizes exhibitions and other cultural events, as well as the Amthof Museum for town history, folklore and building history, which also houses the town archive.
