Data rate limitation

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Data rate limitation (also known as bandwidth control ) is a technology from the field of transmission technology to distribute the available data rate of a transmission channel to competing users according to defined priorities. A practically applicable technique should also be able to work dynamically; H. Restrictions in the allocation of resources should only occur when there is actually a competitive situation.

For Linux there is the utility tc in iproute2, which can be used to implement sophisticated strategies. With the proxy server Squid there are standard parameters with which - in this case for web access - everyday situations can be dealt with relatively easily and efficiently.

Before checking the data rate, one should be able to measure the use of the existing data rate. For example, under Linux there is the program Iptraf , which allows detailed measurements and breakdowns. Iptraf can also be executed in command line mode and thus automatically enable measurements and evaluations under the control of procedures. Under Microsoft Windows Server , there is a network monitor for interactive measurements.
