In 1998, Bank Mandiri was created through a merger of four Indonesian state banks: Bank Bumi Daya (BBD), Bank Dagang Negara (BDN), Bank Expor Impor (Exim) and Bank Pembangunan Indonesia (Bapindo).

In the former building of the Nederlandsche Handel Maatschappij in the old town of Jakarta, the company founded the Bank Mandiri Museum , which deals with the colonial banking history.
