The Barbaraturm is part of the fortifications of the Mönchsberg in Salzburg ( Austria ). He closed the upper kennel of Richterhöhe to the north and also secured the medieval and early modern defensive wall, which extends from the upper edge of the Mönchsbergfels to the vigilante (Mönchsberg 19 A – D).

history

The Barbaraturm is a medieval defense tower. An adjacent tower, now completely in ruins, was used as a powder tower after 1733 and 1744 and in the 19th century as a "laboratory" or "saltpeter tower" for powder production.

In 1898 the tower was bought from the Aryan property of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy and became the property of the city. For a long time it was used by a socialist youth association. Many years after the Second World War, the Werner family of antiques from Salzburg lived in the tower. In 2003 the old walls were acquired by a pediatrician in Hallein and rebuilt.

perception

Barbaraturm from Bucklreutstrasse

The tower is little known as it remains hidden behind a high stone wall from Dr.-Ludwig-Prähauser-Weg on Mönchsberg. From Bucklreuthstraße and above all from the small weir or viewing platform north of the tower, however, especially in winter, you can see the fortifications and the tower stretching north from the Kupelwieserschlössl .
