Barisanus by Trani
Barisanus von Trani is an Italian sculptor from the second half of the 12th century. Nothing is known about his life data.
Life
There are only two works that can be ascribed to him with certainty, the two bronze portals of the Cathedral of Trani San Nicola Pellegrino and the Cathedral of Monreale . He may also have been involved in the bronze door of Ravello Cathedral , the only work that is clearly dated to 1179. The chronology of his works is controversial. Most of the time the Trani portal is dated to 1190 and Monreale to 1200.
Characteristic of these bronze doors is the further development from the only incised predecessor types to a slightly raised, more sculptural representation. Barisanus creates extensive New Testament scenes that clearly show a Byzantine-Oriental influence in their filigree style and in some thematic peculiarities (e.g. depictions of gladiators and the tree of life with antithetical animals).
