Baron Buckhurst
Baron Buckhurst , of Buckhurst in the County of Sussex , is a hereditary British title of nobility , awarded once each in the Peerage of England and in the Peerage of the United Kingdom .
Awards
The title was first created on June 8, 1567 by Letters patent in the Peerage of England for the House of Commons Sir Thomas Sackville . He was also raised to Earl of Dorset on March 13, 1604 . His great-great-great-grandson, the 7th Earl, was also elevated to Duke of Dorset on June 17, 1720 . All of the named titles finally expired with the childless death of his grandson, the 5th Duke, on July 29, 1843.
In the second award, the title was awarded on April 27, 1864 in the Peerage of the United Kingdom to Elizabeth Sackville-West . She was the sister of the late 4th Dukes of Dorset and wife of George Sackville-West, 5th Earl De La Warr . The award was made with the special addition that on her death the title should pass to her second oldest son Reginald Sackville and his male descendants, and then to his younger brothers and their male descendants. Accordingly, her son Reginald inherited her as 2nd baron in 1870. When his older brother Charles, his father's heir, died childless in 1873, Reginald also inherited his titles as 7th Earl De La Warr , 7th Viscount Cantelupe and 13th Baron De La Warr . Since then, the eldest son of the respective earl has had the title of courtesy Lord Buckhurst as the heir apparent . Today's title holder has been his great-great-grandson William Sackville, 11th Earl De La Warr , as 6th Baron Buckhurst , since 1988 .
