Baron Colepeper , of Thoresway, was a hereditary British title in the Peerage of England .

Award and subordinate titles

The title was created on October 21, 1644 by letters patent for Sir John Colepeper of Bedgebery (also Culpeper ). He was a member of the House of Commons for Kent in 1640 , Chancellor of the Exchequer in 1642 and Master of the Rolls from 1643 to 1660 .

The family residences of the barons were Hollingbourne Manor and from 1660 Leeds Castle , both located near Maidstone in Kent .

The title expired with the death of the fourth baron on June 25, 1725.

Trivia

The barons' family took an active part in building up the Virginia colony and held considerable real estate there. What is now Culpeper County in Virginia was retrospectively named in 1749 after the 2nd Baron Colepeper, who was governor of the colony of Virginia from 1677 to 1683.
