Baron Dowding , of Bentley Priory in the County of Middlesex , is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom .

Award

The title was bestowed on July 5, 1943 by Letters Patent to the Air Chief Marshal Sir Hugh Dowding . He was in command of the RAF Fighter Command during the Battle of Britain in 1940. For this he had developed a special air defense system that bore his name.

The territorial dedication of the title refers to the Bentley Priory estate near Stanmore in the London Borough of Harrow , which was the headquarters of the RAF Fighter Command during World War II.

Today's title holder has been his grandson Piers Dowding, 3rd Baron Dowding , since 1992 .
