Baron Freyberg , of Wellington in New Zealand and of Munstead in the County of Surrey , is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom .

The family seat of the barons is Munstead House near Godalming in Surrey.

Award

The title was created on October 16, 1951 for the Governor General of New Zealand , Sir Bernard Freyberg . He had been awarded the Victoria Cross as an officer in World War I and was a general in World War II : He was responsible for the unjustified Allied air raid on Montecassino monastery during the fighting for the Gustav Line on February 15, 1944.

Today's title holder has been his grandson Valerian Freyberg as 3rd Baron since 1993 .
