The title was first created on September 17, 1397 for Richard Gray, Lord of Codnor , by being convened to the royal parliament by the Writ of Summons . His great-great-grandfather Henry de Gray was appointed to parliament on February 6, 1299, which is why he and his direct descendants are often referred to as Barone Gray. However, in the proceedings to revoke the Abeyance of the title in 1989, the House of Lords ruled that it could not be proven whether Henry de Gray and his successor had actually attended parliamentary assemblies. Therefore only the Writ of Summons of 1397 is considered to be the justification for the title Baron Gray of Codnor.

The three sons of the 4th Baron died childless before him, so the title fell between his aunts and their descendants when he died on April 8, 1496 in Abeyance . This hibernation was only ended in 1989 when the title was restored to Charles Cornwall-Legh at his request . The Committee for Privileges of the House of Lords responsible for this came to the conclusion that the 1st, 2nd and 3rd barons had received writs of summons and were also called barons in historical documents, but only arrived afterwards Meetings of the Privy Council took part, which were not formally classified as ordinary meetings of Parliament. The committee only confirmed proper participation in the upper house of parliament for the 4th Baron after a Writ of Summons in 1397 and only recognized this as the date of the award of the title. Cornwall-Legh was thus confirmed not as the 8th, but as the 5th Baron Gray of Codnor.

Today's title holder is his son Richard Cornwall-Legh as the 6th Baron.
