Henry de Gray (nobleman, † 1308)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Henry de Gray (* around 1256; † September 1308 ) was an English nobleman.

origin

Henry de Gray was the eldest son of John de Gray and his wife Lucy de Mohun from Somerset . After his father's death in early 1272, he inherited his estate and Codnor Castle in Derbyshire .

Military career

Henry de Gray served as a knight under the kings Edward I and Eduard II since he was first called on June 14, 1287 for military service to suppress the rebellion of the Welsh Rhys ap Maredudd . In February 1293 King Edward I visited him for a day at his headquarters in Codnor Castle. During the Franco-English War he served in Gascony from 1294 to 1297 . Between 1298 and 1308 he was called to parliament several times by Writ of Summons . It has long been controversial whether he is considered the Baron Gray of Codnor . Since it could not be proven whether he had actually participated in the parliamentary assemblies, the House of Lords decided in 1989 that only his great-great-grandson was first Baron Gray of Codnor from 1397 onwards. During the Scottish War of Independence , Gray was responsible for drawing up the contingent in Essex and Hertfordshire in the spring of 1299 and in the summer of 1299 for the drafting of the armed forces in Carlisle . Until 1306 he took part in several campaigns in Scotland, including in 1300 the siege of Caerlaverock Castle . In gratitude for his services, the king forgave him all his ancestral debts to the treasury.

Marriages and offspring

In his first marriage he married Eleanor de Courtenay, a daughter of Sir Hugh de Courtenay († 1292) and Eleanor le Despencer. He had at least three children with her:

  • Luce de Gray
  • Richard de Gray (around 1281–1335)
  • Nicholas de Gray (* after 1281)

In his second marriage he married Joan de la Mare before June 6, 1301. His heir became his eldest son Richard.
