Edward North, 1st Baron North

Baron North , of Kirtling Tower in the County of Cambridge , is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of England , a barony by writ . It has only been awarded once and has been in Abeyance since 1941 .

Awarding and other titles

The title was created on February 17, 1554 by Writ of Summons by Queen Maria I for Sir Edward North . He was the son of a London businessman who had made a career as a lawyer. He had been three times MP in the House of Commons for Cambridgeshire and held various offices.

On October 24, 1673, the later 5th Baron North was raised to Baron Gray of Rolleston , in the County of Stafford , by Writ of Summons . His son and successor William North, 6th Baron North and 2nd Baron Gray of Rolleston died without legitimate offspring, so that this title with his death in 1734 again went out, while the title Baron North to a cousin Francis North, 3rd Baron Guilford as 7. Baron North fell. He had held the title of Baron Guilford since 1729 and was elevated to Earl of Guilford in 1752 . His son, Frederick North, Lord North , who later became 2nd Earl, was British Prime Minister from 1770 to 1782 . At the death of his son, the 3rd Earl, the two baronies in Abeyance fell in 1802 between his daughters and the earldom fell to his brother. The Abeyance of the Barony North was ended in 1841 in favor of the second-born daughter of the 3rd Earl as the 10th Baroness.

After the 13th Baron North died childless in 1941, the title fell between his two sisters in Abeyance.
