Charles North, 5th Baron North

Sir Charles North, 5th Baron North , 1st Baron Gray of Rolleston (born October 1, 1635 in Kirtling , † January 1691 ) was an English nobleman and politician.

Charles North was the eldest son of Dudley North, 4th Baron North and Anne Montagu (1613 / 14–1681), the second daughter of Sir Charles Montagu, a younger brother of Henry Montagu, 1st Earl of Manchester , and his second wife Mary Whitmore. He studied at Cambridge in 1651 and was knighted before 1667 . On October 17, 1673, he was raised to Baron Gray of Rolleston , in the County of Stafford, by Writ of Summons . After the death of his father in 1677 he inherited the title of Baron North . In 1681 he was governor of Portsmouth .

North married in April 1667 Katherine († 1694), daughter of William Gray, 1st Baron Gray of Warke and widow of Sir Edward Mosley, 2nd Baronet. He had several children with her, including:

His heir became his eldest son, William. His widow was third married in 1691, Francis Russell, who became governor of Barbados in 1694 , where she died that same year.
