Baron Stratheden
Baron Stratheden , of Cupar in the County of Fife is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom .
Awarding and other titles
The title was bestowed on January 22, 1836, on the Hon. Mary Campbell, wife of prominent Whig politician and lawyer Sir John Campbell and daughter of James Scarlett, 1st Baron Abinger . Her husband was Attorney General at the time and was passed over twice on being appointed Master of the Rolls . When he threatened to resign, it was agreed to raise his wife to the nobility.
John Campbell himself was then given the title of Baron Campbell on June 30, 1841, when he was to be appointed Lord Chancellor of Ireland . He was later also Lord Chancellor of the United Kingdom .
Both titles have been combined since the couple were inherited by their eldest son in 1860 and 1861, respectively.
