Baron le Despenser (also le Despencer ) is a hereditary British title of nobility that has been awarded several times in the Peerage of England .

Awards and history of the title

The title was first created on June 24, 1295 for Hugh le Despenser (the Elder) when he was appointed to Parliament by King Edward I through Writ of Summons . He was the eldest son of Hugh le Despenser († 1265), who was appointed to De Montfort's Parliament on December 14, 1264 , usually the creation of the title is already counted from this point in time. The son of the older despencer, Hugh le Despencer (the younger), was also appointed to the royal parliament on July 29, 1314, during his father's lifetime, and was thus raised to the rank of baron in the second award. He and his father were executed in 1326 as a result of intrigues for high treason and their titles were stripped from them.

The son of the younger Despenser , Hugh le Despenser , was appointed to the royal parliament on June 15, 1338 and was thus the third bestowal to be Baron le Despenser. His title expired on his childless death on February 8, 1349. His nephew, Edward le Despenser , was appointed to the royal parliament on December 15, 1357 as Baron le Despenser fourth bestowal. His son, the 2nd Baron , was made Earl of Gloucester in 1397 . In 1398, the high treason sentences of 1326 were retroactively repealed and the Earl was awarded as the 4th and 5th Baron le Despencer. In 1400, however, he was also executed for high treason and his titles were revoked. The judgment was overturned in 1461, but in the meantime the le Despenser family had expired in the male line and the claim to the baronies of the first, second and fourth bestowal was in Abeyance between female descendant lines. In 1604 the Abeyance was ended and the title Mary Fane was awarded as 3rd (or 5th and 6th) Baroness. In the period that followed, the title fell twice more, from 1762 to 1763 and from 1781 to 1788 in Abeyance and is now led by George Boscawen, 9th Viscount Falmouth as the 16th (or 18th and 19th) Baron le Despencer.

On December 17, 1387, the title was again, in the fifth bestowal, by Writ of Summons to Philip le Despencer , a great-grandson of the elder Despenser. The title has been suspended (in abeyance ) since his son, the 2nd baron, died on June 20, 1424 without male heirs. There are probably de iure- entitled descendants in the female line to this day, but so far none of them has succeeded in having the claim to the title effectively confirmed by the House of Lords .
