Barsegh from Ani
Barsegh Pahlavouni ( Armenian Բարսեղ Ա Անեցի ; also Barsel, Basil ; † 1113 ) was from 1081 to 1105 Catholicos of Ani and from 1105 to 1113 Catholicos of all Armenia .
Barsegh was the nephew of the Catholicos Gregory II. Vkayaser , who had installed him in 1081 as bishop in the Seljuk-occupied Ani. In 1090 he deposed the Catholicos of Maraş , who enjoyed the support of Philaretos Brachamios , with the help of Malik Shah . In 1103 Barsegh visited Edessa , where he was lavishly received by Baldwin II . When Vahram died on December 5, 1105 in the monastery Karmir Vanq near Kessoun , he presided over his funeral and thus became a recognized new Catholicos. Barsegh now changed his official seat between Ani, Mesopotamia and Tzamandos and finally settled in Shugur on the Orontes , where he and numerous members of his retinue died on November 13, 1113 when a balcony collapsed after he had met his 18-year-old nephew Gregory III. Pahlawuni (1113–1166) had used as his successor.
