The Basilica of St. Anthony of Padua (also: Church of St. Anthony of Padua ) is a Catholic church on Taufa'ahau Road in Nukuʻalofa , the capital of the Kingdom of Tonga in the Pacific Ocean .

architecture

The church is an impressive round building with a staircase as an entrance. The rotunda is supported by a central pillar. The building and furnishings are extensively decorated with traditional carvings.

history

The church is one of the most important churches in the country alongside the main Cathedral of St. Mary , which is also located in Nukuʻalofa. It belongs to the Diocese of Tonga . The current building near the royal tombs was built by volunteers between 1977 and 1980. Pope John Paul II awarded it the title of basilica .

In 2018 the construction of the St. Francis of Assisi Primary School began on the site of the cathedral.
