The Basilica of St. George is a Syro-Malabar church in Angamaly in the Ernakulam district in the Indian state of Kerala .

history

The parish of Angamaly is considered to be the origin of the Syrian Thomas Christians in Malabar . The construction work for the new St. George's Church was initiated by the then Vicar Paul Kariyatty, the foundation stone was laid on November 16, 1997 by Cardinal Varkey Vithayathil . The church was consecrated on December 31, 2006. Pope Benedict XVI awarded the church the title of minor basilica in June 2009 . The proclamation took place on the evening of August 27, 2009 in the presence of 28 bishops from all over India.

Building

The basilica is the largest church in Kerala with an area of ​​over 2000 square meters and can accommodate 8000 people. The altar area covers an area of ​​almost 200 square meters. Behind the altar hangs a seven meter high crucifix, framed by a statue of Mary and a statue of John. The dome of the church reaches a height of about 60 meters. The 16 windows that surround the dome are decorated with portraits of the apostles, the 64 windows of the church show saints and events from the New and Old Testaments.
