Angamaly ( Malayalam : അങ്കമാലി Aṅkamāli [ ˈaŋɡəmaːli ]) is an Indian city ​​in the Ernakulam district in the state of Kerala , 33 km north of Ernakulam . It has about 33,000 inhabitants (2011 census). Angamaly is considered the historic seat of the Eastern Church Metropolitan of the Thomas Christians and therefore appears in the title of the Malabar Catholic Grand Archbishop and the Syrian Orthodox " Catholicos of India".

The municipality is divided into 30 wards .

Angamaly is well connected by all means of transport. The Cochin International Airport is located near Angamaly.

Angamaly station, where all major trains stop, serves as an important connection point for people from the east side of the district to the rest of the country. A railway line from Angamaly to Sabarimala is proposed, which connects the high mountains with the lowlands. Progress in completing the new line has been slow due to various regional and political issues. The Kochi subway will be extended to Angamaly in the next stage.

National Highway 544, which connects Kanyakumari with Salem , runs through Angamaly. The NH 17, which connects Kochi and Mumbai , is 20 kilometers from Angamaly. The main road (MC Road) that connects central Kerala with the capital of Kerala serves as a major road connecting many cities in the east of the state.

'Manjaly thodu' flowing through Angamaly was an important waterway, and Angadikadavu near the old church was an important trading center in ancient times, selling spices, rice, bamboo and other agricultural and mountain products to the old port of Muziris were sent. Manjaly Thodu is part of the new National Waterways program and is being further developed.

Culture

Angamali is enriched with cultural and devotional centers. There are many ancient churches that are centuries old with well-defined frescoes and other murals that are also known for certain historical meetings and decisions that shaped modern Christianity across India.

The largest church is the St. Georg Basilica . This Catholic church in the heart of the city is considered the largest of its kind in India. Vembiliyam Mahadev Temple, Paddupusha Bhagavathi Temple, Thirunayathodu Temple, Krishnaswamy Temple, Venguru Temple, Kidangooru Temple, Kothakulangara Temple, Jain Temple, Elavuru Temple, Muzhikulam Temple are all Hindu pilgrimage centers near Angamaly.

There are also several hospitals and educational institutions in the area.

economy

Angamaly has a state industrial area with numerous renowned factories at the southern end. The Kerala State Bamboo Corporation Ltd. is headquartered in Angamaly. There are several small cracker production units in the area.
