The Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe is a Roman Catholic church building in San Salvador , the capital of El Salvador . The church, also known as La Ceiba de Guadalupe , is dedicated to the Mother of God under the patronage of Our Lady of Guadalupe and has the title of a minor basilica . The area around the church is called La Ceiba and is halfway between San Salvador and Antiguo Cuscatlán to the west .

history

In 1904, at the instigation of José Encarnación Argueta, a chapel was built to present the oil painting of the Virgin of Guadalupe, the patron saint of Latin America, supposedly appeared to Juan Diego . The picture was painted in Rome and had been blessed by Pope Pius X. This simple chapel was built on the hill of Las Delicias near Santa Tecla , about six kilometers west of San Salvador. This sanctuary was destroyed by an earthquake on June 7, 1917 and was never rebuilt. Instead, the picture came to La Ceiba in 1921 at the instigation of Antonio M. Brunetti, where a new shrine was to be built.

The new building dragged on for a long time until Augusto Baratta took over the building in 1951, who was able to complete it in 1953 thanks to the support of the German-born philanthropist Walter Deininger .

Building

The three-aisled basilica is characterized by the colonial style. The rectangular reinforced concrete building was plastered white. Above the entrance area in the northwest the bell tower rises towards the Panamericana , in front of the entrance a colonnade with intertwined columns was built. The central nave is significantly higher and wider than the side aisles. The stone high altar with the large miraculous image, which is flanked by columns and roofed over by a portico, stands in a slightly divided round apse.

The church was founded in 1960 by Pope John XXIII. raised to the rank of a minor basilica . The basilica is a popular wedding church.
