The basic protection effected in the electrical protection against electric shock if no fault conditions are present ( International Electrotechnical Vocabulary - IEV 195-06-01 ).

For low-voltage systems , the basic protection corresponds to the protection against direct contact .

Precautions for basic protection

For low-voltage systems , according to DIN VDE 0100-410, Section 411, the precautions for basic protection are divided into precautions for normal conditions and for special conditions. Precautions for special conditions are only permitted if the systems are operated and monitored by qualified electricians or electrotechnically trained persons.

DIN EN 61140 (VDE 0140-1) also describes further precautions for basic protection such as voltage limitation, steady-state contact current and charging or potential control, which are not used in low-voltage systems according to DIN VDE 0100-410.

Basic protection under normal conditions

Basic insulation

Basic insulation prevents contact with conductors or conductive parts that are live in normal operation. This basic insulation must only be removable by destroying it.

Covers or wrappings

Covers and casings must meet certain protection classes and can only be removed with a tool.

Basic protection under special conditions

Under special conditions, basic protection can also be guaranteed by obstacles or by placing them outside of the hand area. Obstacles only protect against unintentional contact with conductors or conductive parts, but not against deliberate contact. When arranged outside of the hand area , parts that have different potentials are arranged at least 2.5 m from one another so that they cannot be touched at the same time.
