Life

Benjamin Joseph Keiley received the sacrament of ordination for the diocese of Wilmington on December 31, 1873 . When the Bishop of Wilmington, Thomas Andrew Becker , took over the leadership of the Diocese of Savannah in 1886, Keiley followed him as its Vicar General in the new diocese. In 1896 he became rector of the cathedral . When the episcopal church had to be rebuilt after a fire, Keiley celebrated the first Holy Mass after the restoration on December 24, 1899.

Pope Leo XIII. appointed him on April 2, 1900 Bishop of Savannah. He received his episcopal ordination from the Archbishop of Baltimore , James Gibbons , on June 3 of the same year; Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Charleston , Henry Pinckney Northrop , and the Bishop of Wilmington, John J. Monaghan . As a motto he chose Dominus Meus et Deus Meus ( My Lord and my God , Jn 20:28).

Keiley's particular concern was the Afro-American Catholics in his diocese. In 1920 he fulfilled a long-cherished wish with the solemn consecration of the cathedral.

Because of his bad health, Pope Pius XI. on March 18, 1922, his early resignation and appointed him titular bishop of Scilium .
