Michael Joseph Keyes
Michael Joseph Keyes SM (born February 28, 1876 in Dingle , County Kerry , Ireland , † July 31, 1959 ) was Bishop of Savannah .
Life
Michael Joseph Keyes joined the community of the Marist Fathers in and received on 21 June 1907, the sacrament of Holy Orders .
Pope Pius XI appointed him Bishop of Savannah on June 27, 1922. He received his episcopal ordination from the Archbishop of Baltimore , Michael Joseph Curley , on October 18 of the same year; Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Richmond , Denis Joseph O'Connell , and the Bishop of Saint Augustine , Patrick Joseph Barry . As a motto he chose Ave Maris Stella ( Greetings, star of the sea ) from a hymn by Venantius Fortunatus .
Keyes promoted lay engagement and supported the work of the Catholic Laymen's Association of Georgia . His conservative financial policy, he stabilized the budget of the diocese and left his successor a significant financial reserve.
Because of his bad health, Pope Pius XI. on September 23, 1935, his early resignation and appointed him titular bishop of Areopolis . At the same time he was appointed papal assistant to the throne .
After his health stabilized, he taught moral theology at the Marist College in Washington, DC
