Batanya
Batänja (emphasized on the second syllable) refers to a former Walser settlement in the municipality of Haldenstein in the Graubünden Rhine Valley . The settlement, inhabited all year round until 1869, is located at approx. 1400 m above sea level. M. at Haldensteiner Calanda .
history
Batänja is first mentioned in 1274 under the name Seuils . The name Batänja, which then prevails, probably goes back etymologically to the Rhaeto-Romanic word pitgogna (= steeply rising path, stutz , steep section of the path). Batänja, which at times had more than 100 inhabitants, was politically and ecclesiastically always part of the Haldenstein community. Until the 19th century, however, the residents ran their own school. According to tradition, in 1424 Peter von Griffensee gave the place as a fief to the brothers Hans, Dietrich and Jos Batänier . The oldest surviving house, the so-called Büehl Hus in Walser German , dates back to 1464.
present
The mountain festival is celebrated every two years on Batänja, the proceeds of which are used to maintain the Walser buildings.
