Bat Cave and Cascade Caverns State Nature Preserves are two Nature Preserves totaling 146 acres (59 hectares) within the boundaries of Carter Caves State Resort Park in Carter County , Kentucky , United States . Bat Cave was established on December 16, 1981 as part of the Office of Kentucky Nature Preserves system to protect the Indiana mouse- eared bat (Myotis sodalis), as this bat species overwinter in the caves with up to 28,000 specimens. The Cascade Caverns Preserve was established to protect two rare plant species in Kentucky, the Vermont maple (Acer spicatum) and the Canadian yew (Canadian yew).
