Batik is a project of the Apache Software Foundation to develop a free software component for the display ( rasterization ), generation and manipulation of Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG). This is developed in Java and is available across platforms as free software under the Apache Software License .

The project was initially supported by IBM and the code was then donated to the Apache Software Foundation, whereupon other companies and developer (groups) also participated in the development. For a long time it was the most complete SVG 1.1 implementation and as such passed almost 94% of the official SVG tests in version 1.7. (It is now in second place just behind Opera .)
