Battle Chess

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Battle Chess is a chess program first published in 1988 by the US game developer Interplay .

Game mechanics

The specialty of the program lies in the 3D animations . The capturing of pieces is shown by short animated game scenes in which the chess pieces fight each other. Unlike the previously released Archon , which is only loosely based on chess, the fights can not be influenced by the players. The “winner” is always the beating figure.

Development history

The idea for the game probably came from the 1976 film Futureworld - The Land of Tomorrow .

The game was the model for a number of titles such as Star Wars Chess .

Ports

The game was initially released for Amiga 500/600 (OCS / ECS) and IBM PC (DOS) and was ported to numerous other systems in the following years:

successor

In 1991, Battle Chess was released for the PC. In the same year a sequel called Battle Chess II: Chinese Chess , based on Xiangqi , commonly known as "Chinese Chess" was released. The next year, Battle Chess 4000 appeared , whose animations parody science fiction films and television series, such as B. a battle sequence that includes the monolith from 2001: A Space Odyssey . A similar game, called Battle vs. Chess , was developed by TopWare Interactive . Interplay won a copyright lawsuit that prevented the game from being released on time. Battle vs. Chess has now been released on May 17th, 2011.
