history

The idea of equipping the state of Bavaria with a network of WLAN access points was first announced in 2015 by the then Bavarian Minister of Finance, Markus Söder . The goal at the time was to build a network of 10,000 WLAN access points by 2020. They should be made available to citizens and tourists in attractive places. The Free State supports municipalities in setting up WiFi hotspots with up to € 10,000 for up to 4 locations. Funding of an additional € 10,000 can be applied for for regional projects. The individual municipalities are responsible for ongoing operations.

The project was tested in a pilot phase at the beginning of 2015, and 150,000 users were active in May 2015, who together transferred a data volume of 20 terabytes . In June 2016, together with project partner Vodafone , the goal was doubled to 20,000 access points.

The target of 20,000 access points throughout Bavaria was reached ahead of schedule in June 2019. As of February 2020, there are already over 23,000 access points. Among them are now well over 1,350 public transport - buses , where BayernWLAN is available and there very intensively used.

In October 2019, more than 9.3 million users logged on, and 1,018 terabytes of data were moved in the download and 106 terabytes in the upload. A total of 1,124 terabytes, the data volume of 1.6 million full data CDs.
