The Bear River Glacier (English Bear River Glacier , German "Bear River Glacier") is a 5.5 km long glacier in the extreme south of the Boundary Ranges in the Canadian province of British Columbia . The glacier is often abbreviated as Bear Glacier .
geography
The Bear River Glacier is an outlet glacier of a glaciated mountain range east of the Portland Canal , a long narrow fjord that forms the southern boundary of the Alaska Panhandle . The nutrient area is located at an altitude of 2100 m north of Otter Mountain . The 550 m wide glacier flows in a northerly direction and ends at about 550 m height west of the Bear River Pass . Below the glacier lies Glacial Lake Strohn Lake . This is drained via the Bear River west to the Portland Canal.
The British Columbia Highway 37A , which connects Stewart with Meziadin Junction , runs over 450 m high Bear River Pass . The lower glacier area and the glacial rim lake are located in Bear Glacier Provincial Park .
Glacier development
The glacier has been retreating steadily since the last century. In 1913 the Bear River Pass was still glaciated. At that time, the meltwater was still flowing in both directions down the valley, to the west and east. With the retreat of the glacier, Strohn Lake was formed . Today the meltwater only flows off in a westerly direction.
