Bedford is a small town at the foot of the Winter Mountains in the municipality of Raymond Mhlaba , Amathole District , Eastern Cape Province in South Africa . In 2001 it had 5,976 inhabitants.
Bedford was founded in the mid-18th century by European settlers who emigrated to South Africa. The then famous Scottish poet Thomas Pringle was one of the settlers who settled in Bedford.
Bedford is now a center for cattle, sheep and horse breeding. The city is also considered a place for artists. Many retirees live in Bedford. Due to the fact that there are hardly any industrial companies, the unemployment rate is high.
