Bega Schoolgirls

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In 1997 a criminal case from Australia became known internationally as Bega Schoolgirls , in which two 16-year-old girls were kidnapped, raped and murdered.

Sequence of events

Two 16-year-old girls, Lauren Barry and Nicole Collins, were on a camping trip in a remote location and were out for a walk that night when they happened upon their kidnappers.

They were detained for several days and brutally raped several times during that time. Eventually they were handcuffed and stabbed with a knife.

reporting

The case was also reported in Europe and America for several weeks. Several thousand people took part in the funeral service and burial of the girls in Bega .

The father of one of the victims, Garrett Barry, criticized that the television interviews had exploited the emotions of the relatives and that their call to search for the missing girls had been pushed into the background.

Condemnation of the perpetrator

The perpetrators were sentenced in 1998 and 1999 to prison terms spanning several decades, with no possibility of early release. One of the perpetrators, Leslie Camilleri, was charged in 2012 with the murder of a 13-year-old girl, Prudence Bird, in 1992 and has admitted the crime.
